JOB SUMMARY:
The Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band is in the process of developing the Gun Lake Public Safety Department. The department is currently seeking a full-time Public Safety Director who will serve under the direction of the Tribal Council and general supervision of the Tribal Administrator. The Director of Public Safety will be responsible for developing the newly formed agency and must have at least 10-years of progressive experience in law enforcement. Additional responsibilities will also include enforcing laws and ordinances, preventing and detecting crimes, protecting files and property by promoting and preserving peace within tribal lands.
The Public Safety Department will serve the Gun Lake Tribal Community near Dorr, Michigan, as well as other tribal owned lands and the Gun Lake Casino. The Gun Lake Public Safety Department will be a full service police agency, and members will be required to maintain MCOLES Certification as well as maintaining federal law enforcement commission from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. At this time, résumés are being sought from interested individuals with experience in tribal law enforcement as well as Tribal, State, and Federal court procedures.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
• Police Training and Licensing Examination per Michigan Commission of Law Enforcement Standards Certification (MCOLES).
• Must have a Bachelors’ Degree or an equivalent combination of education and 10-years that provides appropriate knowledge, skills and abilities with a proven track record of successful law enforcement management
• Past tribal law enforcement experience
• Knowledge and understanding of tribal customs
• Compliance with the MCOLES Active Duty Firearm Standard
• Must possess or obtain a valid Michigan Operator’s License
• Must possess or obtain a basic First Aid card
• Possess considerable knowledge of police enforcement laws; excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills and understanding of management methods and principles
• Considerable knowledge and proven history of writing and obtaining grant awards
• Candidates selected to interview for this position will be required to submit to a criminal record background, credit history, and driving record checks
• Residency within 30-miles of tribal lands is preferred
